Rickard Rakell scored the shootout winner in the fourth round and the Penguins beat the Dallas Stars 2-1 Saturday night in Pittsburgh.
Dallas forced overtime when Tyler Seguin tied it 1-1 with 30 seconds left in regulation after Roope Hintz won a faceoff and Seguin deflected Jason Robertson’s shot past Arturs Silovs.
Ben Kindel and Sidney Crosby also tallied in the shootout for the Penguins while Seguin and Wyatt Johnston scored for Dallas. After Rakell’s goal put Pittsburgh up, Silovs deflected Mikko Rantanen’s shot to end it.
Connor Dewar scored his first goal of the season for the Penguins, who were playing the second of a back-to-back and had lost three straight (0-2-1). Silovs made 24 saves.
Jake Oettinger made 20 saves for Dallas, which had won two straight.
Oettinger, who came in with consecutive shutouts, saw his shutout streak end at 188:52, the third longest in franchise history.
Crosby is still looking for his first regulation goal six games into the season.
Pittsburgh was 0-for-5 on the power play; Dallas was 0-for-3.
The Penguins appeared to take a 1-0 lead late in the first period when Stars forward Justin Hryckowian tapped a loose puck into his own net during a scramble in front. But it was ruled that Pittsburgh’s Hendrix Lapierre used a high stick earlier in the sequence.
Silovs robbed Seguin with his left pad with 4:25 remaining in the second period to keep the game scoreless.
Oettinger made a superb glove save against Crosby in the slot in the opening minute of the third period.
Dewar made It 1-0 at 1:57 of the third period. He carried the puck into the zone along the left boards, cut across the slot and lifted a backhand that deflected off Dallas defenseman Lian Bichsel’s stick and over Oettinger’s right shoulder.
Oettinger made a pair of saves on Evgeni Malkin in the final minute of overtime.
